Transforming how we protect workers, increase efficiency, and empower truly informed decision-making through the adoption of technology to harness the power of data in real-time. Industry 4.0 and Digital Transformation: More than buzzwords Around the world, traditional industries are in the midst of a digital transformation that is accelerated by exponentially developing technologies (e.g. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, machine vision, automation, intelligent robots, autonomous drones, sensors, 3D printing, 5G connectivity, etc.) Companies and their industrial processes need to adapt to this rapid change if they are not to be left behind by developments in their sector and by their competitors. This process has, since the 1970s, been driven by developments in electronics and information technology. The widespread adoption by the manufacturing and production industries worldwide is paving the way for disruptive approaches to worker safety, development, production, and overall efficiency. So what is Industry 4.0? The 4.0 is representative of the 4th Industrial Revolution. So what is an industrial revolution? Throughout human history there have been paradigm changes that have altered the course of our evolution - when the effect of these changes is large enough, they revolutionize the current norm and push our world forward in ways that cannot be turned back, leading to even more innovations and thus generating a cycle. Innovation is what led humans from merely surviving to thriving. The start of the first industrial revolution was the most important event in the history of humanity since the domestication of animals and the development of agriculture. This first industrial revolution occurred through the development of steam-powered mechanical machines. Let’s call it Industry 1.0. The advent of Industry 2.0 or the second industrial revolution was brought about when the concept of electricity was stable enough to be leveraged by industry. This quickly led us to Industry 3.0, which through major improvements in electronics such as the first programmable logic controller in 1969, opened the door to I.T. and automation to further enhance production capabilities. The fourth industrial revolution is upon us and digitalization is a critical success factor. Each industrial revolution has generated fast economic growth and significant improvements in living standards. It is therefore crucial for organizations, and people to be a part of this rapid development. As robotics technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, not only in the hardware but also in the software control systems and artificial intelligence required to execute autonomous inspections tasks, the reality of having robots integrated into everyday operations at our facilities is here. The MicroWatt team will be available at the knowledge bar to discuss opportunities, capabilities, challenges, and solutions surrounding inspection robotics and their role in your organization‘s digital transformation strategy.

Does It Work? Lessons Learned from the Field: Adopting the Right Methane Detection & Measurement Technology & Approach

  • pr-alarm1:00 PM - 1:45 PM
  • pr-locationExhibition Floor - Centre Court Stage

GreenPath has had the opportunity to evaluate the performance, effectiveness and data outputs of various methane detection and measurement technologies and experience first-hand the effectiveness and approach of each of these technologies in Canada, the United States and Internationally. Through that process, we learned a number of key lessons: (1) there is a critical difference between known leak location and estimated leak location, (2) the role that field deployment plays in source identification, (3) these technologies have a broad spatial and temporal resolution, (4) minimum detection limits, and (5) how to classify emissions detected by these technologies under the regulations (i.e. a leak or a vent). These lessons have allowed us to narrow the gap in standardized methodology, enabling us to successfully adopt new technology in appropriate applications.

New Innovations in Online Control System Migrations

  • pr-alarm11:00 AM - 11:45 AM
  • pr-locationExhibition Floor - Centre Court Stage

Control system migrations are complicated. Now imagine being able to wire, test and commission your new control system while the plant is running, then complete the swingover at the press of a button. During a conventional control system migration, wires must be moved from the old system to the new one. Traditionally, this was accomplished in two ways; either a rip-and-replace requiring an outage, or online requiring extensive field work, forces, and complicated wiring. TEMPUS, a new innovation developed by CIMA+, offers the best of both worlds. Using a unique combination of in-house developed hardware and procedures, TEMPUS allows for zero downtime and a seamless cutover to a new control system. This presentation summarizes how TEMPUS simplifies projects, reduces costs, and eliminates downtime.

Storytelling and New Pipeline Monitoring Technologies

  • pr-alarm12:00 PM - 12:45 PM
  • pr-locationExhibition Floor - Centre Court Stage

Weaving a set of activities near a pipeline to a complete story reduces the chance for false alarms. It gives a much better experience for pipeline operators using next-generation fiber sensing technologies. From an operations perspective, looking at pipeline monitoring, false alarms are the most significant problem pipeline operator faces. False alarms can take a large toll on the operations team, diverting attention and dealing with what might be nothing more than background noise or legitimate activity near the pipeline. In addition, false alarms reduce the trust operators place in their monitoring systems. PrismaFlow is a next-generation fiber-sensing-based pipeline monitoring solution, which can scale to 1000s kilometers of pipeline network. Using highly detailed data and state-of-the-art algorithms and machine learning models, PrismaFlow can detect and classify different events taking place around a pipeline and build a logical timeline of events that help raise the alarm only when a threat occurs. This way, farm vehicles traveling on the pipeline RoW do not trigger a false alarm. The session will present PrismaFlow and the art of storytelling, weaving different events into a timeline and logical story.
